Eastchester 350th Anniversary Committee Digitizes Local Newspaper Pages

Although it's now been 351 years since Eastchester was founded, volunteers with the town's 350th Anniversary Steering Committee recently celebrated the beginning of the digitization of more than a century of local weekly newspapers as a "final gift." The steering committee is preserving much of Eastchester, Tuckahoe and Bronxville's histories in digital form, spending months digitizing copies of local literature, which will soon be accessible and searchable by anyone with a working Internet connection.

Pope Francis 'Visits' Tuckahoe Elementary School

Although Pope Francis won't arrive in New York until Thursday, students at the Immaculate Conception School in Tuckahoe got into the spirit of his historic visit earlier this week, with several events geared toward celebrating his arrival. Although most of the teachers and students will have to miss seeing Pope Francis live during his visit, they've been busy this week, crafting a large sign welcoming the pope, naming a faux "Pontiff of the Day," and his religious court.

Teens sentenced in mall assault

Two teenagers charged with a hate crime at the Palisades Mall on Black Friday last year avoided jail time in Rockland County Court today. In a plea deal, Chris Bujaj, of Tuckahoe, and Ardijan Mehaj, of Yonkers, received youthful offender status and five years probation.

Tuckahoe High School Again Named State Reward School

Tuckahoe High School has been selected as a New York State Reward School, the third consecutive year the school received the honor, interim School Superintendent Charles T. Wilson announced. Schools receive the recognition from the state Commissioner of Education when they "have made the most progress or have the highest performance with no significant gaps in student achievement."
